Over 70% of catfish disease outbreaks in Nigeria are triggered or enabled by poor water quality. Bacteria and fungi that are harmless in clean, oxygenated water become deadly when dissolved oxygen drops, ammonia rises, and pH shifts outside the safe range.

Overstocking is the single most common cause of disease outbreaks in Nigerian catfish ponds. When too many fish share the same water, oxygen depletes faster, ammonia builds faster, and fish are under chronic stress — making every pathogen more dangerous.

Every disease introduction into a Nigerian catfish farm can be traced to one of two sources: infected new fish or contaminated equipment. A 14-day quarantine eliminates the first risk entirely.
Never introduce new fingerlings or juvenile fish directly into your production pond. A small holding tank (even a tarpaulin tank) for quarantine is one of the best investments you can make.
When new fish arrive, give them a 5-minute bath in 5g/L salt solution before putting them in the quarantine tank. This kills surface bacteria and fungal spores on their skin.
Watch for any symptoms — reduced feeding, abnormal swimming, lesions. If any fish shows symptoms, treat the entire quarantine tank before introducing to production ponds.
Poor feed quality is an underappreciated disease risk factor. Mouldy feed introduces Aspergillus fungi which produce aflatoxins that damage fish livers and suppress immunity — making fish vulnerable to every pathogen.
Nets, buckets, sorting boards, and sampling containers move disease between ponds every time they are used. Establish a simple disinfection protocol.
